Redirecting Your Focus

Colossians 3:1-2

So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on earth.

Paul urged the Colossians to turn their eyes off the world and to seek what is above. We would be wise to do the same. Seeking after worldly gain will only leave us empty, and we can’t take it with us, anyway. If we have truly died to our flesh and been raised to new life in Christ, we should seek Him where He is – at the right hand of God, interceding for us. Instead of worrying about things on earth, we should be taking every concern to Christ in prayer and doing what He has called us to do.

Paul knew our minds have a tendency to wander, and mine wanders miles every day. In fact, if I got the physical exercise my mind has endured, I’d be an athletically toned size 4! We must set our minds on what is above and resist the temptation to meditate on the things of the earth, which are quickly passing away.

The Devil wants to get us sidetracked from our purpose on earth, and he knows how to throw a distraction in our way. He knows exactly what will get our attention, and he preys on our weaknesses. The only way to strengthen ourselves against his onslaughts is to seek Christ, who is our strength. When we focus upon Him and what He has called us to do, we will avoid the paths that lead us to nowhere and delay or prevent us from the good things God has planned for us.

Set your minds on what is above today, and seek Christ. If you have a need, He is at the right hand of the Father interceding for you. Take it to Him. If you have a desire that is unfulfilled, take it to Him. If you need doors opened or a new opportunity, seek Him. Live above the circumstances of this world by focusing on the Messiah. Your hope, your calling, your purpose, and your destiny reside in Him. Focus upon what is important, and allow the non-essential things fade from your radar. You will find a life worth living when you do.
